Job Opening: Lead Field Instructor

LEAD FIELD INSTRUCTOR for Adventure Calling Oasis Elementary

The Lead Field Instructor is expected to lead/supervise, facilitate, and instruct JTREE outdoor educational programs for the Joshua Tree Residential Education Experience (JTREE) “Adventure Calling Oasis Elementary” program as developed for the State of CA Parks & Rec OEP Grant award. These programs may include hiking, naturalist studies, ecology, field science, and community projects. The program activities will take place at Oasis Elementary School and inside Joshua Tree National Park (JTNP). In addition, the Lead Field Instructor may be responsible for some administrative duties, as assigned by the JTREE Grant Administrator. The Lead Field Instructor promotes JTREE’s core values, program standards, and education curriculum to ensure the highest program quality for program participants and serves as a role model to students and JTREE staff by their actions, appearance, manners, language, and general conduct.

Hourly Rate: $35-$50/hour 
*Background Check required for this position due to working with children.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1)  Program Administrative Duties as Lead Instructor:  

  • Conduct staff orientation, training and on-going supervision of Field Instructors and Interns (a total of 6-8 staff members).
  • Mentor all Field Instructors and Interns.
  • Review staff timesheets for accuracy and submit to JTREE Grant Administrator.
  • Responsible for preparation for activity sessions including ensuring equipment, materials and supplies, and other program logistics are set up and on-site for each activity session.
  • Report to and work closely with the JTREE Grant Administrator.
  • Assist JTREE Grant Administrator in the assessment of program evaluations utilizing surveys. Make changes as necessary to ensure all objectives are met in the areas of customer service and program effectiveness.

2)   Program Facilitation: 

  • Responsible for leading, instructing, and supervising youth for entirety of program activities alongside Field Instructors and Interns.
  • Responsible for instruction of the defined program activities in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission and education curriculum.
  • Supervise and manage youth grades K-6 from Oasis Elementary School during activity sessions.
  • Provide instruction for a youth audience in environmental education, natural history, ecology, outdoor skills, and other related fields as per the JTREE planned program curriculum.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in supervision of youth recreation programs.
  • Current Basic First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Current Driver’s License and clean driving record.
  • Willingness to undergo a Federal Background Check.
  • Passion for JTREE’s mission.
  • Interest in and comfortable working with youth participants ages 5 through 11.
  • Professional experience with nonprofit organization, youth audiences, outdoor programming, or experiential education pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of Mojave Desert ecology and culture.
  • Availability to work a variety of times and days.
  • Strong public speaking ability.
  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy.

Desirable Qualifications
(These items are a plus in the qualification process, ALL applicants encouraged to apply!)

  • Degree in ecology, biology, environmental science, education, or related fields such as experiential education, adventure education, or place-based education.
  • Advanced instructional, leadership and interpretive skills and associated technical, ecological and cultural knowledge related to adventure activities, sustainability practices, youth wellness, community action and youth character development.
  • Current Wilderness First Aid (WFA). Employees are responsible for keeping their certification current.
