Job Opening: Field Instructor Intern/Assistant

FIELD INSTRUCTOR INTERN/ASSISTANT for Adventure Calling Oasis Elementary

The Field Instructor College Internship is a 130-200 hour program over the course of the spring to fall academic school year. Field Instructor Interns support the effective delivery of the program activities as developed for the State of CA Parks & Rec OEP Grant award. As support for the Field Instructors, Interns will rotate through the various activities assisting with curriculum execution for youth grades K-6. These program activities may include hiking, naturalist studies, ecology, field science, and community projects and will take place at Oasis Elementary School and inside Joshua Tree National Park (JTNP). ​ The Interns serve as role models to students and JTREE staff by their actions, appearance, manners, language, and general conduct.

Hourly Rate: $16-18/hour 
*Background Check required for this position due to working with children.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Assisting with Program Facilitation:  Responsible for support of Field Instructors as they provide instruction and oversight for a youth audience in environmental education, natural history, ecology, outdoor skills, and other related fields as per the JTREE planned program curriculum.

  • Responsible to assist in JTREE activities in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission and education curriculum.
  • Support management of youth grades K-6 from Oasis Elementary School during assigned activities.
  • Assist with other program activity duties such as sign in and out process and other duties as requested by Program Coordinator and Field Instructors.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Passion for JTREE’s mission.
  • Willingness to undergo a State and Federal Background Check.
  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Possess a valid CA Driver’s License.
  • Enrolled in college courses geared towards ecology, biology, environmental science, education, or related fields.
  • Interest in and comfortable working with youth participants ages 5 through 11 in the outdoors.
  • Experience with youth audiences, outdoor programming, or experiential education pedagogy.
  • Ability to work effectively and productively as part of a team, indoors and outside under variable weather conditions.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work a variety of times and days.
  • Excellent communication skills with ease and enthusiasm for talking to individuals of all ages.
  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy.
