Grades 2: Solar Impacts
February 13, 2025 @ 12:30 pm - 1:15 pm
Big Question: Why are some parts of the playground hotter than others?
Small Question: How does the color of a surface impact its temperature?
Vocabulary: Ultraviolet Rays, adaptations Warmer, Cooler, Temperature, Material, Surface, Shade, Dark, Light
Objective: Students will explore different parts of the playground to hypothesize and determine which areas are hotter. They will understand that the color of a material can affect the temperature of a surface.
Materials: Water bottles and sunscreen. JTREE will provide remaining materials.
2-PS1-2 Matter and Its Interactions: Analyze data obtained from testing different materials to determine which materials have the properties that are best suited for an intended purpose.
3-5-ETS1-2 Engineering Design
Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
MS-ETS1-2 Engineering Design
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
