Grades 5: Solar Prints-Part II

February 25, 2025 @ 10:10 am - 11:10 am

Solar Photograms workshop

Part II: Solar Photograms – Traditional vs Toned

NOTE: You must sign your class up for both Parts I  and II

Objective:

Last year students explored the basics of the photographic process by creating a solar photogram using cyanotype chemistry and found objects. A photogram is made by placing objects directly onto paper and then exposing to light. This year 5th grade students will make 2 photograms during one session with a stronger focus on design, transparency, and creating a more layered image. During the 2nd session, They will explore using natural plant dyes to tone one print from deep blue to almost no blues. The other print stays as is. The two prints will be compared – traditional vs toned.

Materials: Water bottles and sunscreen. JTREE will provide remaining materials.

Standards:

  • Crosscutting: CONNECTIONS
    • Physical, earth, and engineering

    • Physical science – natural process of the sun; its importance to life on earth
    • Engineering- solar energy
  • Concepts from solar printing
