Big Question: What type of structures do critters need to be able to stay cool in desert environments?

Small Question: How does the color of a surface impact its temperature?

Vocabulary: Ultraviolet rays, adaptations, hotter, cooler, temperature, surface, shade, dark, light, competition

Objective: Students will work together to create and test different structures that might protect animals from UV rays. They will reflect on how competition for resources affects animals protection from harmful sun rays.

Materials: Water bottles and sunscreen. JTREE will provide remaining materials.

2-PS1-2 Matter and Its Interactions: Analyze data obtained from testing different materials to determine which materials have the properties that are best suited for an intended purpose.

3-5-ETS1-2 Engineering Design
Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.

MS-ETS1-2 Engineering Design
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
