Grade 1: Solar Impacts
February 11, 2025 @ 10:35 am - 11:05 am
Big Questions: How do ultraviolet rays from the sun affect animals? Does the impact of ultraviolet rays change with sunscreen? Animals don’t have sunscreen – what adaptations might they have to protect themselves from UV rays?
Objective:Students will learn about ultraviolet rays and their impacts on humans and animals. Students will explore how sunscreen protects humans from UV rays and conisder how animals protect themselves without sunscreen.
Vocabulary: Warmer, Cooler, Temperature, Ultraviolet Rays, Adaptations
Materials: Water bottles and sunscreen. JTREE will provide remaining materials.
K-ESS3-1 Earth and Human Activity
Modeling in K–2 builds on prior experiences and progresses to include using and developing models (i.e., diagram, drawing, physical replica, diorama, dramatization, storyboard) that represent concrete events or design solutions. Use a model to represent relationships in the natural world. Use a model to represent the relationship between the needs of different plants and animals (including humans) and the places they live.
3-5-ETS1-2 Engineering Design
Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
MS-ETS1-2 Engineering Design
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
