SUMMARY:Grade 4: Plant Adaptations
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nBig Questions: What structures help animals and plants survive in the desert? \nSmall Question: What are internal and external structures? \nObjective: By the end of the lesson\, students will be able to construct an argument that explains how plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival\, growth\, behavior\, and reproduction\, with a focus on desert environments. They will explore native vs non-native plants. Students will also create science journal entries to document their learning. \nMaterials: Water bottles and sunscreen. JTREE will provide remaining materials. \nVocabulary:  Ethnobotany\, Structures\, Internal\, External\, Survival\, Behavior\, Reproduction\, Adaptation\, Ecosystem\, Camouflage\, Mimicry\, Water Conservation\, Transpiration\, Root System\, Leaf Structure\, Photosyntheses\, Xerophyte\, Erosion. \n4-LS1-1 From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival\, growth\, behavior\, and reproduction. \nREGISTER YOUR CLASS\nTo register your class for this date & time\, please complete and submit the form below.

SUMMARY:Grades 4/5/6 Living\, Breathing\, & Learning Outdoors
DESCRIPTION:Oasis Elementary…Living\, Breathing\, and Learning Outdoors\nPREFACE: Reviving the school’s oasis was a goal that was developed by school staff and parents during the initial meetings of the grant application process. That goal will develop over the 3-year period of the grant ending in Spring 2026. It will be a work in progress with the hope of creating a nice outdoor space where classrooms can visit for outdoor learning. \n\nThroughout this current school year all students have contributed to revival of the school’s oasis that has been neglected for several years. Students studied pollinators\, native plants and their adaptations\, decomposers\, the role of pollinators\, and how we attract this pollinators to our oasis. And even district maintenance is eager to help. To date they have worked on getting irrigation operational and removing dead trees and shrubs. \nObjective: \nIn this last session of the year\, students will now experience Living\, Breathing\, and Learning Outdoors. Students will review the work they have done throughout the year including the ladybugs and butterflies that were hatched and released\, planting of native seeds nurturing them in the classroom under grow lights\, planting of some of those seedlings and more mature native plants\, making red worm compost to nourish the soil\, and more recently some classrooms will have praying mantis to release into the oasis. A visit to the oasis will reveal the fruits of their efforts with evidence that their oasis is alive and beginning to thrive. Students will be asked what they see/hear/smell\, what they observe that is different from their first visit to the oasis last fall\, what they think has made this difference\, and what needs to happen to nurture their oasis into the future. Finally\, students will get their classroom sit pads and clipboards. We will give them a brief assignment such as drawing\, poetry or worksheets to do while out at the oasis. The classrooms will keep their bins of sit pads and clipboards to encourage teachers to take students out to oasis for occasional lessons as weather permits. \nThe legacy will be their care and understanding of how land use impacts the interdependency of all living things on Earth. The ultimate goal is inspiring lifelong stewards of the earth through activities\, experiences\, and sharing with others in the community. \nWhere:  The JTREE team will meet students in the quad. \n\nMaterials/Supplies: Each classroom will be provided a tub of sit-pads and clipboards to be used for outdoor education in their oasis. All materials are provided by JTREE. \nREGISTER YOUR CLASS\nTo register your class for this date & time\, please complete and submit the form below.

SUMMARY:Grades 4: Solar Powered Prints
DESCRIPTION:Solar Photograms \nObjective: \nThis lesson focuses on exploring the basics of the photographic process by creating a solar photogram using cyanotype chemistry and found objects. A photogram is made by placing objects directly onto paper and then exposing to light. Our process will involve photosensitive chemistry. Students will choose a few objects from those provided to create an interesting composition on a piece of photosensitive paper. They will place their compositions in the sun and observe how the sunlight “develops” their photograph resulting in a photogram of Prussian blue and white where the UV light was blocked by the objects. Students will be able to discuss how the solar printing process worked and how various factors such as exposure time\, intensity of UV light according to the current season\, and arrangement of their objects affected their results. \nMaterials: Water bottles and sunscreen. JTREE will provide remaining materials. \nStandards: \n\nCrosscutting: CONNECTIONS\n\nPhysical\, earth\, and engineering\n\n\nScience & Engineering Practices\n\nHypothesize how solar works\nConnect to solar energy\nExperiment with printing – hypothesize\n\n\nDisciplinary Core Ideas\n\nEarth science – history/evolution of the sun\nPhysical science – natural process of the sun; its importance to life on earth\nEngineering- solar energy\n\n\nConcepts from solar printing\n\nPaper covered in a photo-sensitive chemical that changes when exposed to light\nWater stops the chemical process – fixes the shadows of objects onto the paper\n\n\n\nREGISTER YOUR CLASS\nTo register your class for this date & time\, please complete and submit the form below.

SUMMARY:Grade 4 Safety in the Desert
DESCRIPTION:Safety in the Desert\nObjective: \n\nStudents will learn safety in the desert by participating in a a grade level appropriate “Desert Safety Obstacle Course.” Students will be broken into small groups. Each group will be given a backpack by their assigned Field Instructor. Students will explore their understanding of what would be useful when trying to be safe in the desert. They will then be presented with a large variety of safety items compiled by JTREE. The group will then be given the scenario “You have gone on a hike in Joshua Tree National Park but took a wrong turn and got lost. Which items do you think we should choose to add to our safety backpacks?”  \n\nAfter preparing their safety backpacks each group of students will proceed along the obstacle course where they are faced with safety item scenarios earning points with correct answers. Example: You stumbled on the trail and tripped into a cholla cactus. You now have a bunch of. needles stuck in your shoe and leg. Which item in your backpack would be most useful? \nAlso along the course are Desert Obstacles. Student groups earn points for successfully collaborating and passing through each obstacle (teamwork also earns points). Additionally\, 4th grade students will have character cards. An example is if students are challenged by the cactus needle pokes but do not have a comb in their pack\, the character card may tell them they have to hop on one let for the next 2 stations. \n\nWhere:  The JTREE team will meet students in the quad. \n\nMaterials/Supplies: Sunscreen and water bottles! Other materials provided by JTREE.

To date they have been working on getting the irrigation working.

To date they have been working on getting the irrigation working.
