DESCRIPTION:Safety in the Desert\nObjective: \n\nStudents will learn safety in the desert by participating in a a grade level appropriate “Desert Safety Obstacle Course.” Students will be broken into small groups. Each group will be given a backpack by their assigned Field Instructor. Students will explore their understanding of what would be useful when trying to be safe in the desert. They will then be presented with a large variety of safety items compiled by JTREE. The group will then be given the scenario “You have gone on a hike in Joshua Tree National Park but took a wrong turn and got lost. Which items do you think we should choose to add to our safety backpacks?”  \n\nAfter preparing their safety backpacks each group of students will proceed along the obstacle course where they are faced with safety item scenarios earning points with correct answers. Example: You’ve been hiking and are starting to feel a little overheated. What item in your backpack would be most useful? \nAlso along the course are Desert Obstacles. Student groups earn points for successfully collaborating and passing through each obstacle (teamwork also earns points). Example: Students help their blindfolded teammate pin a bandaid on a poster by giving directions.  \n\nWhere:  The JTREE team will meet students in the quad. \n\nMaterials/Supplies: Sunscreen and water bottles! DESCRIPTION:Oasis Elementary…Living\, Breathing\, and Learning Outdoors\nPREFACE: Reviving the school’s oasis was a goal that was developed by school staff and parents during the initial meetings of the grant application process. That goal will develop over the 3-year period of the grant ending in Spring 2026. It will be a work in progress with the hope of creating a nice outdoor space where classrooms can visit for outdoor learning. \n\nThroughout this current school year all students have contributed to revival of the school’s oasis that has been neglected for several years. Students studied pollinators\, native plants and their adaptations\, decomposers\, the role of pollinators\, and how we attract this pollinators to our oasis. And even district maintenance is eager to help. It will be a work in progress with the hope of creating a nice outdoor space where classrooms can visit for outdoor learning. \n\nThroughout this current school year all students have contributed to revival of the school’s oasis that has been neglected for several years. Students will review the work they have done throughout the year including the ladybugs and butterflies that were hatched and released\, planting of native seeds nurturing them in the classroom under grow lights\, planting of some of those seedlings and more mature native plants\, making red worm compost to nourish the soil\, and more recently some classrooms will have praying mantis to release into the oasis. Students will be asked what they see/hear/smell\, what they observe that is different from their first visit to the oasis last fall\, what they think has made this difference\, and what needs to happen to nurture their oasis into the future.
