That goal will develop over the 3-year period of the grant ending in Spring 2026. It will be a work in progress with the hope of creating a nice outdoor space where classrooms can visit for outdoor learning. \n\nThroughout this current school year all students have contributed to revival of the school’s oasis that has been neglected for several years. Students studied pollinators\, native plants and their adaptations\, decomposers\, the role of pollinators\, and how we attract this pollinators to our oasis. And even district maintenance is eager to help. To date they have worked on getting irrigation operational and removing dead trees and shrubs. \nObjective: \nIn this last session of the year\, students will now experience Living\, Breathing\, and Learning Outdoors. Students will review the work they have done throughout the year including the ladybugs and butterflies that were hatched and released\, planting of native seeds nurturing them in the classroom under grow lights\, planting of some of those seedlings and more mature native plants\, making red worm compost to nourish the soil\, and more recently some classrooms will have praying mantis to release into the oasis. A visit to the oasis will reveal the fruits of their efforts with evidence that their oasis is alive and beginning to thrive. Students will be asked what they see/hear/smell\, what they observe that is different from their first visit to the oasis last fall\, what they think has made this difference\, and what needs to happen to nurture their oasis into the future. Finally\, students will get their classroom sit pads and clipboards. We will give them a brief assignment such as drawing\, poetry or worksheets to do while out at the oasis. The classrooms will keep their bins of sit pads and clipboards to encourage teachers to take students out to oasis for occasional lessons as weather permits. \nThe legacy will be their care and understanding of how land use impacts the interdependency of all living things on Earth. SUMMARY:Grade 5 Safety in the Desert
DESCRIPTION:Safety in the Desert\nObjective: \n\nStudents will learn safety in the desert by participating in a a grade level appropriate “Desert Safety Obstacle Course.” Students will be broken into small groups. Each group will be given a backpack by their assigned Field Instructor. Students will explore their understanding of what would be useful when trying to be safe in the desert. They will then be presented with a large variety of safety items compiled by JTREE. The group will then be given the scenario “You have gone on a hike in Joshua Tree National Park but took a wrong turn and got lost. Which items do you think we should choose to add to our safety backpacks?”  \n\nAfter preparing their safety backpacks each group of students will proceed along the obstacle course where they are faced with safety item scenarios earning points with correct answers. Example: You stumbled on the trail and tripped into a cholla cactus. You now have a bunch of. needles stuck in your shoe and leg. Which item in your backpack would be most useful? \nAlso along the course are Desert Obstacles. Student groups earn points for successfully collaborating and passing through each obstacle (teamwork also earns points). 5th Grade students will have character cards and bonus points they can earn. Students can be challenged by a character card if the cactus needle pokes them\, but they do not have a comb in their pack\, therefore they have to hop on one leg for the next 2 stations. SUMMARY:Grade 5 Safety in the Desert
DESCRIPTION:Safety in the Desert\nObjective: \n\nStudents will learn safety in the desert by participating in a a grade level appropriate “Desert Safety Obstacle Course.” Students will be broken into small groups. Each group will be given a backpack by their assigned Field Instructor. Students will explore their understanding of what would be useful when trying to be safe in the desert. They will then be presented with a large variety of safety items compiled by JTREE. The group will then be given the scenario “You have gone on a hike in Joshua Tree National Park but took a wrong turn and got lost. Which items do you think we should choose to add to our safety backpacks?”  \n\nAfter preparing their safety backpacks each group of students will proceed along the obstacle course where they are faced with safety item scenarios earning points with correct answers. Example: You stumbled on the trail and tripped into a cholla cactus. You now have a bunch of. needles stuck in your shoe and leg. Which item in your backpack would be most useful? \nAlso along the course are Desert Obstacles. Student groups earn points for successfully collaborating and passing through each obstacle (teamwork also earns points). 5th Grade students will have character cards and bonus points they can earn. Students can be challenged by a character card if the cactus needle pokes them\, but they do not have a comb in their pack\, therefore they have to hop on one leg for the next 2 stations. To date they have been working on getting the irrigation working.  \nObjective: \nIn this last session of the year\, students will now experience Living\, Breathing\, and Learning Outdoors. Students will review the work they have done throughout the year including the ladybugs and butterflies that were hatched and released\, planting of native seeds nurturing them in the classroom under grow lights\, planting of some of those seedlings and more mature native plants\, making red worm compost to nourish the soil\, and more recently some classrooms will have praying mantis to release into the oasis. A visit to the oasis will reveal the fruits of their efforts with evidence that their oasis is alive and beginning to thrive. Students will be asked what they see/hear/smell\, what they observe that is different from their first visit to the oasis last fall\, what they think has made this difference\, and what needs to happen to nurture their oasis into the future. Finally\, students will get their classroom sit pads and clipboards. We will give them a brief assignment such as drawing\, poetry or worksheets to do while out at the oasis. The classrooms will keep their bins of sit pads and clipboards to encourage teachers to take students out to oasis for occasional lessons as weather permits. \nThe legacy will be their care and understanding of how land use impacts the interdependency of all living things on Earth. DESCRIPTION:Oasis Elementary…Living\, Breathing\, and Learning Outdoors\nPREFACE: Reviving the school’s oasis was a goal that was developed by school staff and parents during the initial meetings of the grant application process. That goal will develop over the 3-year period of the grant ending in Spring 2026. It will be a work in progress with the hope of creating a nice outdoor space where classrooms can visit for outdoor learning. \n\nThroughout this current school year all students have contributed to revival of the school’s oasis that has been neglected for several years. Students studied pollinators\, native plants and their adaptations\, decomposers\, the role of pollinators\, and how we attract this pollinators to our oasis. And even district maintenance is eager to help. To date they have been working on getting the irrigation working. \nObjective: \nIn this last session of the year\, students will now experience Living\, Breathing\, and Learning Outdoors. Students will review the work they have done throughout the year including the ladybugs and butterflies that were hatched and released\, planting of native seeds nurturing them in the classroom under grow lights\, planting of some of those seedlings and more mature native plants\, making red worm compost to nourish the soil\, and more recently some classrooms will have praying mantis to release into the oasis. A visit to the oasis will reveal the fruits of their efforts with evidence that their oasis is alive and beginning to thrive. Students will be asked what they see/hear/smell\, what they observe that is different from their first visit to the oasis last fall\, what they think has made this difference\, and what needs to happen to nurture their oasis into the future. Finally\, students will get their classroom sit pads and clipboards. We will give them a brief assignment such as drawing\, poetry or worksheets to do while out at the oasis. The classrooms will keep their bins of sit pads and clipboards to encourage teachers to take students out to oasis for occasional lessons as weather permits. \nThe legacy will be their care and understanding of how land use impacts the interdependency of all living things on Earth.
